Hi, Katrina, Kindle Fire is only compatible with Amazon app store.
Amazon says it will review every app in its Appstore for Fire compatibility, as part of an automated process. Rejected apps will include those that rely on a gyroscope, camera, WAN module, Bluetooth, microphone, GPS, or micro SD. Apps are also forbidden from using Google's Mobile Services (and in-app billing), which, if included, will have to be "gracefully" removed. In terms of actual content, Amazon has outlawed all apps that change the tablet's UI in any way (including theme- or wallpaper-based tools), as well as any that demand root access.
According to recently appeared leaks on the Internet, Nook Color 2 will be released by Barnes

Apps and games for Kindle Fire will come from Amazon Appstore for Android. Amazon's approach is like Apple's approach with its Appstore: Test apps first before making them available to users. This is good for most common users. Power users who like a less fettered connection to developer apps will be able to side-load Android apps to their Kindle Fire on their own, according to rumors. Amazon is on record,

as recognizing the value of letting power users root the device, but clearly their plans also provide a more nurturing environment for the common user by default.
You can check out the Amazon Appstore for Android,

prior to your purchase to see if it has apps that you like.

We really don't know until reviews come out when the Kindle Fire is released on November 15, 2011. My educated guess is that the operating system is not android but a custom built operating system by Amazon. I would assume that the Kindle Fire would only be able to access the Amazon App store and not the android marketplace.

As far as I know its only the amazon app store it will use. I don't know if you could just install the regular market app.
