My cat has a really bad rash-type thing above his eyes?

For the last two years or so, my cat (a persian tabby mix) has seemed to have had skin irritation on his forehead, where he would constantly 'clean' that area and scratch at it. Took him to the vet a couple of times, and each time they gave me ointment that worked so-so and called it sensitive skin.

In the last three weeks, it has gotten much worse. He scratches that portion of his forehead to the point of it bleeding and looking firey red with spots all over. I've been applying vaseline twice a day which temporarily helps, but when it dries up, the rash gets bad again. He's an indoor cat, so I don't know about any outdoor mites or anything.

I'm gonna take him to the vet in a few days. In the meantime, what could be wrong? This morning he seems to have difficulty keeping his eyes all the way open.

i don't honestly know, BUT have you been taking him to the same vet?  There are veterinary dermatology specialists - This has been going on for two years, and Vaseline is  the only thing that helps?  Sounds like it MIGHT be mites (that are suffocated somewhat by the Vaseline) but I think if you can possibly afford it, a visit to a specialist might be in order -  There are fungal cultures that a vet lab (maybe not the vet himself, but he can send it to a reference lab). .

Those open sores can then get what's called "secondary" infections - then it's round and round.  Please consider another vet, at least, just a second opinion, no insult intended.

i would go to a feed store or a pet store ( i would call first ) and ask for a tube of  TERREMYCIN..........this is a tube of antibiotics only to be used for animals and in the eye area...........

i have a siamese mixx that i think rammed his eye into a wall or the washer when he was chasing someone / playing.............

i checked his eye and the pupil was not damaged but the white area was really swollen.........so i went down the street to    D
